My own journey into learning more about spirituality has been one born of loss and grief. My son, Josh, died at age ten in his sleep one sunny summer Saturday morning without any warning. In the grieving process, you look for answers, but at the same time, I didn't want my answers to be born of "wishful thinking." For several years, I sought answers for the why of life and death outside of the religious/spiritual arena because I felt that many religious beliefs WERE born of nothing more than wishful thinking and someone wanting to soothe the pain of a grieving person. Too many times, I had someone who meant well tell me that he was much better off, and I would have to take a deep breath to stifle my own homicidal reaction to that comment. (Josh was not ill, his death was literally unexpected, he was my "healthy" child. My daughter had been released to come back home from the hospital ICU the day before--she is a type 1 diabetic with complications, so I live with potential loss of her on a frequent basis.) If you want the wishful thinking sort of explanation of life after death, there are 1001 versions available on the internet, in your library, and likely on most street corners as well. I didn't and I don't want that, I want the Truth, whatever that truth turns out to be.
